Airsoft - History of the game
Airsoft is a dynamic adrenaline sport that has gained huge popularity all over the world. But how did this fighting game even come about? Take a look at the history of Airsoft with us from humble beginnings to large communities of passionate players here and abroad.
How did it begin?
Airsoft has its roots in Japan, where the first replica weapons were created in the 70s and 80s. Back then, the Land of the Rising Sun had very strict laws banning firearms. Ichiro Nagata, a local photographer and shooting enthusiast, built the first functional, non-lethal imitation firearms. These replicas were powered first by a freon-silicone and later by a propane-silicone mixture nicknamed "Green gas". They were initially used for target shooting and realistic reconstructions of military operations, from which the so-called survival games developed, which is how airsoft is sometimes called in Japan to this day. This adrenaline sport grew in popularity and the first companies specializing in the production of these "toys" were created, such as Asahi Firearms or Tokyo Marui. The latter came in 1992 with the AEG system, i.e. a weapon powered by an electric motor. And the airsoft phenomenon continued to grow.
From Japan to the whole world
In the 1980s and 1990s, airsoft spread to the United States and Western Europe, where the first airsoft teams and clubs began to emerge. At the same time, the development of technology and weapons also improved, which contributed to greater authenticity and attractiveness of the game. Players began to improve their equipment, specialized shops were created, and airsoft began to be recognized as a real sport. Many security forces and military units now use airsoft for tactical exercises.
Airsoft in the Czech Republic
With the Velvet Revolution, the revived Czechoslovakia and later the Czech Republic received news from the West, including airsoft. The main importer of airsoft weapons was POSPA Models at the time, but a small community of players at that time found equipment wherever they could. The big airsoft boom in the Czech Republic did not occur until the beginning of the 21st century. The sport quickly gained popularity, mainly due to its realistic nature and tactical elements, which attracted players with a passion for strategy and cooperation, as well as military history enthusiasts. Currently, there are many airsoft teams, clubs and organized events in the Czech Republic that attract players of all ages.
Airsoft as a business
As the interest in airsoft grows, so does the demand for quality airsoft equipment. Airsoft companies no longer only produce a wide range of replica weapons, but protective gear, clothing and military equipment and other accessories. However popular airsoft is worldwide, its production is still located mainly in Asia. However, Japan, the originality of airsoft, is no longer at its peak. Production expanded to Taiwan and Hong Kong. It has also spread strongly in China in recent years, but the communist government eventually imposed significant restrictions on it and outlawed many manufacturers without proper licenses. In our country, the oldest and largest Czech company in this field is Jan Šulc – Bohemia Air Soft.
Airsoft is a sport that combines a passion for tactics, cooperation and adrenaline experiences.
